(De/Re)Constructing borders – narratives and imaginaries on divided towns in Central Europe in comparative perspective

Participation in the 18th Sociological Congress

Members of the project team: Kamilla Dolińska, Julita Makaro, Natalia Niedźwiecka-Iwańczak and Elżbieta Opiłowska took part in the 18th Sociological Congress, which took place from 13 to 17 September in Warsaw.

Julita Makaro and Natalia Niedźwiecka-Iwańczak presented their paper "The towns speaks - about borders and their (non)crossing on the basis of the analysis of the information dress of Cieszyn and Český Těšín as well as Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice" at the symposium "(In)visible borders". In their presentation, the researchers presented the spatial narratives reconstructed on the basis of an analysis of the urban garment in the four centres, mainly focusing on how this space speaks of transborderness in divided cities.
Kamilla Dolińska and Elżbieta Opiłowska had a talk on 'Reconstructing the stories of divided cities' within the thematic session 'Storytelling. Stories about the modern world'. They discussed the narrative analysis model used in the project and presented selected examples of narratives reconstructed from focus group interviews with elites and residents of Słubice, Frankfurt, Cieszyn and Český Těšín. Moreover, Elżbieta Opiłowska co-organised the thematic group "Bordering - debordering - rebordering - uncertainties and recompositions in borderlands".
