(De/Re)Constructing borders – narratives and imaginaries on divided towns in Central Europe in comparative perspective

Associate Professor of Sociology and Head of the Center for Regional and Borderlands Studies at the University of Wroclaw. She received her PhD from the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and her Habilitation from the University of Wroclaw. In July and September 2021 she was Guest Professor at the UniGr-Center for Border Studies, University of Luxembourg and from October 2020 to March 2021 - Guest Professor at the Viadrina Institute of European Studies. She has been granted scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Alfred Toepfer F.V.S. Foundation, Robert Bosch Foundation and German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. She has been a visiting fellow at the Centre for Border Region Studies at the University of Southern Denmark, Sønderborg, Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) at the University of Leipzig and Centre for Interdisciplinary Polish Studies at the European University Viadrina. Her main expertise is in borderlands studies, memory cultures and German-Polish relations. Currently Elżbieta Opiłowska is leading two research projects on “Poland and Germany in the European Union. New forms and models of bilateral relationship in foreign policy and cross-border cooperation (in cooperation with Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, funded by the German-Polish Science Foundation) and “(De/Re)Constructing borders – narratives and imaginaries on divided towns in Central Europe in comparative perspective” (funded by the Polish National Science Centre).
